Phishing is an online criminal activity where the fraud acquires sensitive or personal information from the target. This information can be username, password, credit card details, name of mother, place of birth etc, and is generally extracted using social engineering techniques. Thus, Phishing Security, that is online security of users against Phishing, is very necessary.
Acquiring username and password can be very disastrous for the target, as most people keep same username and password for every account. Sharing of credit card details is obviously not desirable and can lead to huge monetary losses. By knowing personal information like place of birth, the Phishers or their companions can make fake account in banks and make unscrupulous dealings in your name.
Phishing is generally done by sending emails or instant messages to potential targets which appear to be from some bank or an institution, which will be beneficial for the target. There is a link in the email which directs the target to a site controlled by phisher where the target is requested to fill in personal details. Thus the Phishers acquire the details, while the target is still under impression that he is providing his details to the bank. Anti Phishing Software is a computer program which scans an email or website and identifies Phishing content. Most of the web browsers and email clients are integrated with this software in from of a real toolbar. This toolbar displays the main domain of the website being visited, so that you can tell whether you are on the bank site or not. Some software also contains a link for known Phishing sites and blocks these sites with or without the consent of the user. A study conducted by 3Sharp concluded that among the various anti Phishing tools available for Windows Operating System, Internet Explorer 7 and Net craft Toolbars are the most effective tools for Phishing Security. Some other software which can be downloaded from internet are PhishTank Site Checker, Google Safe Browsing, WOT, Verisign EV Green Bar, iTrustPage, Finjan Secure Browsing, FirePhish, Calling ID Link Advisor, Spoof Stick and trust bar. The Australian Bankers Association has decided to add a multi level security for login details, so that even if Phisher acquires details of the account of the user, he cannot login, thus minimizing the losses. Due to rise in Phishing, the banks are losing their creditability and the customers are afraid of online transactions, thus leading to losses for the banks. Due to the rise in security against Phishing, the Phishers are innovating new ways for fraud every day. The Phishing Security methods will only work if it is up to date with recent methods. It is a duty of every net user to report the Phishing sites which they have knowledge of to effectively combat this evil.
